MCM Sports Park
In 2009, Monte Christo Miqlat (MCM) received a 20 year lease from the Drakenstein Municipality
for the New Orleans Sports ground. This property, which used to be a quality sports ground, had been left to decay and was a site for gang activity and other negative influences.
By early 2010, MCM was able to complete the first phase of renewal, which included repaired fencing, 2 full size football pitches and a field hockey pitch, offices, storage, and stands to watch the games. By mid-2010, the fields were once again hosting up to 1000 children a week in sports programs. Plans for the second phase are now under way.
MCM Coffee Shop
You will find our cozy little coffee shop on the corner of Van der Lingen Street and Pastorie Avenue. We are a peaceful little haven if you want to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We are a Street off the Main Street, which makes us a little quieter and more tranquil.
We do not only have a lovely Stoep in front, but also an adorable little garden at the back - with a swing and sandpit for kids. Upstairs you will find a conference venue as well as a space furnished for smaller meetings, bible study groups or whatever your need might be.
Growing up in distressed communities is not easy. Lack of strong male role models, street gangs, drug and alcohol abuse and crime are rampant...hard for children to avoid. Strong sports programs are a very effective deterrent.
The MCM Coaching 1000 program is meant to meet the need. The backbone of the program is to raise up 20 quality coaches able to teach both sports skills and life skills. With each of these coaches leading 50 young men and women the program provides an opportunity for 1000 children to lead healthy, positive lives and stay away from the streets.
Tiffany's Community Gym
Tiffany's center is located in the Klein Drakenstein community of Paarl East. With support from community members and the Virgin Active Corporation, we were able to develop a new community-focused gym to provide a badly needed location to maintain physical fitness.
Projected to start operations in October, 2010, this facility will reach many people who, to date, had been unable to find quality exercise alternatives.
MCM Food Center
In early 2008 MCM decided that something had to be done to help provide meals to the most distressed communities in the area. Plans were made to create a food center with an initial target of being able to provide up to 5,000 meals per day.
The center was opened in May, 2008 with a full kitchen and bakery. Currently, we have seven 200 liter soup pots as well as bakery capabilities that can produce up to 10,000 meals per day. The food is distributed through schools and community soup kitchens.
Community Nutrition Development Centers (CNDC)
In 2010, MCM was selected by the Department of Social Development to oversee the new CNDC program. As program manager, MCM is responsible for creating the first ten centers covering the communities of Paarl, Wellington, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.
Full Circle Homeless Ministry
There are an estimated 2,000 homeless people living on the streets of Paarl. To respond effectively to their needs, Full Circle Homeless Ministry was founded. Based on an effective program in Cape Town called U-turn, the program has a three phase approach that includes:
- Making Contact - helping the homeless with their most immediate needs and getting to know them
- Rehabilitation - providing job opportunities and training that allows the homeless to get back on their feet.
- Reintegration - helping the participants to get through the process of getting a job and re-entering society
